A former political editor of the Daily Mirror, Alastair joined Tony Blair's team in opposition and played a central role in building the New Labour project and its media strategy ahead of the 1997 general election. He served as the Prime Minister's Official Spokesman and Downing Street Press Secretary from 1997 to 2000, then as Director of Communications and Strategy until 2003. In 2005 he advised the British & Irish Lions on media during their tour of New Zealand.

Since leaving frontline politics he has written more than twenty books, including several volumes of diaries, four novels and Winners: And How They Succeed, which examines what drives success across politics, business and sport. His more recent But What Can I Do? Why Politics Has Gone So Wrong, and How You Can Help Fix It became a Sunday Times bestseller.

In March 2022 he launched The Rest Is Politics with former cabinet minister Rory Stewart. The podcast brings together two figures from opposing political traditions to discuss current affairs, global events and the inner workings of government, and has grown into a live and interview-led brand, including the Leading series of conversations with public figures.

Alastair is also a prominent mental health campaigner. He has spoken openly about his own experience of depression, alcohol and stress in books including The Happy Depressive and Living Better: How I Learned to Survive Depression, and in the BBC documentary Depression and Me. He was an ambassador for the Time to Change campaign and encourages employers to offer Mental Health First Aid training. In 2017 he was made an Honorary Fellow of the Royal College of Psychiatrists.

Today he advises organisations on political and communications strategy and works extensively with charities. On stage he shares practical lessons on leadership, strategy and resilience: challenge your assumptions, understand your opponents, build a clear plan and pursue it with determination.
